This was a pretty awful Christie. I've never clicked with Marple like I have with Poirot but I think this was particularly poor. I never cared about the mystery and felt like the resolution was quite weak. It was easy to read but unfortunately didn't feel worth it.

My first Christie and there's even more class subtext than I expected (probably what Rian Johnston is copying in the Benoit Blanc films even more than any parlor scene). The racism is shocking and unfortunately makes sense for the writer and the characters she's writing - they're largely British in the 20th century and by default bigoted. Caveat emptor though.

Note for audiobook readers: The American accents in the edition read by Emilia Fox, especially that of the character Walter Hudd, are so hilariously atrocious that I almost didn't finish the book. There's no mention of his character's region of origin—American is his only identifier—, and the narrator had him traveling from New York to Boston to Atlanta to Dallas, with detours to Glasgow, sometimes within a single sentence. Carrie Louise’s Mid-Atlantic accent was much more stable, with the occasional London R, but that's nitpicking and was only noticable, because Walter had me on alert.
