Didactic? Sure. But sometimes young kids need lessons to be really clearly delineated. Teachers often ask for Julia Cook titles & this seems like it would fit right in with that kind of book. And it has a good story with a plot that touches on familiar things. Also the animals are cute & the bright cartoon style illustrations will be engaging to young kids + the repeated affirmation is a nice example to learn. I especially like how supportive all the friends were.
My big qualm is that I'm ok with the power of yet. But when it comes to "grit" as stated in the back matter, I have issues with how it has been used by educators with some communities in which kids may already be demonstrating grit just by showing up to school. So I recommend the book, but with the caution that it be used with a careful nuance in growth mindset conversations to be inclusive of those kids who might already be demonstrating a lot of "grit" that you may not even be aware of or see. And I don't think the book will, but how this topic is used sometimes can. I definitely want to check out the other books in this series, though, to consider for my elementary library.
