The prose was so pretty but all the blood and gore just wasn't for me!

No. When the author’s words take me out of the story, it’s not a good experience. Every page had me counting how many words I did not know the meaning of. Not enjoyable. I won’t be seeking out Khaw’s other works.

Ok so I know I said that I wasn’t going to read a fantasy but this one intrigued me. But I’m going to be very honest, I didn’t even know what was going on half the time LMAO. They were using big girl fantasy words and I had to keep looking shit up. Idek what the moral of the story was. But it was entertaining, there was slight body horror from the mermaid just eating body parts and attacking people. I didn’t really understand the pig thing? Idk call me dumb lol but other than that it was alright

I really enjoyed Khaw's "Nothing but Blackened Teeth" and was really eager to read this one, but the pacing was too slow for me and I've decided to move on.

If I could give this 6 stars I would.

It's such a beautiful, dark book. Gorgeous prose and interesting mythology. I went into it knowing nothing and I think that's the best way.
The atmosphere is immaculate and the world so crystal clear even without being overly descriptive.

I didn't expect to cry but I did in the end?

Hey so this is insane? Sort of the most romantic thing I’ve ever read tho so take that how you will - didn’t quite understand why the two leads loved each other but goddamn did they
