No quotation marks and a very abrupt ending. Honestly, nobody in this book is really happy.

What a beautiful little book. The opening of the book pulls you right in, and then the first perspective of the book was great, but I wasn't quite sure where it was going for a lot of it, and kept wondering why we couldn't return to that prologue scene. But when Winman shifts to the other perspective for the second half of the book, it became extraordinary. I was devastated by it, and the sentences were so beautifully structured. I then went back to that first part when I finished the book and realized how wonderfully constructed the whole book was, and it's my fault for having been waylaid by that gorgeous opening and not paying attention to the shift. When God Was a Rabbit is a favourite of mine, and this is a very different book, but so beautifully told.

I really like the insight this book gave me into what it was like to have HIV before modern medicine. I enjoyed Michaels story way more than Ellis's. I feel like there could have been so much more added regarding the "big" stuff. There was a lot of little moments of their lives being told but when it came to the main storyline of the book it just seemed to have so much missing. However, the book is very realistic in a good way. It brings you down to earth in such a relatable way, especially when it comes to heartbreak.
