A brutal subject. Didion communicates it artfully as expected.

And here, Didion runs.
At the pit of fear.
At the pit of political turmoil.
At the pit of political unraveling.
At the pit of being a woman.
There's a scene where she has dinner at a hotel with her husband about the fear of a tea light going out at the table. This scene was followed by this:
If even the Sheraton was not safe from the clutches of perilous Salvador, what is she to do? A democratic voice born from republican upbringings on $5 writing royalties (๐๐ง๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ ๐๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ณ๐บ 1984), could you blame her for accepting this book deal and turning two weeks and safe POV's to formulate her thoughts on such land? Is it just? Even if she didn't talk to locals?
Though it puts her journalism into perspective, she still did the work. To the best of her ability. In her own safety and in her own way.
She ends the book with fear. Fear leaving its feet from Salvador soil and off and back to the US where she realized the political state of the US for her time and how it should act.
Free will.
Capacity.
In her own way. But like an an animal, in flight full of fear, she moved.
And this is how she moved.

Really captivating. It is very short and not my personal favorite Didion writing, but it isn't a bad read. The situation in El Salvador was horrific.ย
