I definitely enjoyed this book more towards the end. I found myself getting bored at some parts until about 75% of the way through, where it took off and didn’t stop for me. I would have rated it a 4/5 if I hadn’t been bored in some parts, since the book is very long and could be quite slow at times, and if we had had the
Spoiler aspect of vampires, witches, dragons, and werewolves revealed to us sooner, since something was clearly going on.
The ending is a good cliff hanger that makes me excited to get into the next book of the series.

I feel like this book was probably started as a twilight fanfic, but is honestly better. It follows a valley girl type main character named grace who has to move and transfer schools after the untimely death of her parents. She is not at all like Bella swan in the sense of the "I’m not like other girls" trope; in fact, the only things I think she actually has in common with Bella are moving from somewhere hot to somewhere cold, and
Spoilerhaving 2 guys fight over her and be very over protective, one who is super dark, mysterious, and intense, while the other is goofy and more normal (very Edward vs Jacob)

I do think that
Spoiler Jaxon is a ridiculous name and an even more ridiculous character, although I definitely am on team Jaxon rather than Flint. Since the character is obviously not real, I don’t really care about the crazy protectiveness he has over grace and can definitely see the draw to it. I also think grace’s internal commentary on him is funny and makes sense for a high schooler navigating her first love. I’ve seen spoilers about the next book, so I’m curious to see where this goes.

I wish I would have seen a bit more of Macy. I really like her as a character and I think it is set up well to have her recurring as a best friend of grace’s. She’s a sweetheart and a great friend.

Overall, this is a book I did enjoy a lot. It’s one of those books that is not really the best of writing but the plot and drama makes it a lot of fun to read. It’s like watching a soap opera, where you know it’s not exactly high quality but it does not detract from the entertainment value in the slightest. If you are looking for something to have ups and downs of drama, romance, betrayal, and magic, while not taking itself too seriously, this is a fantastic option and I highly recommend!!!

This sort of had potential but it wasn’t well written. There was too many cliches and big dose of insta-love. The main character was kind of dumb and kept saying unbelievable stuff. None of the characters knew anything about personal space. And I’d be rich if I had a dollar for every time I read the phrase “then again.”

Spoiler

Sorry not sorry but this is nearly as bad as Twilight.

Boy and girl meet and fall hopelessly in love in… six days. Like… what kind of Disney nonsense is this.

Also almost nothing but pining happens in 80% of the book. There is literally no plot, no point. Then out of the blue comes a climax that is actually good and has stakes. But it raises question that don’t get answered and it left me feeling frustrated.

I also do not understand how Grace forgives Flint. I do not give a rats ass about the fact he was trying to stop something bad. Who the hell we’ll immediately forgive someone who tried to kill you four times.

And let’s not forget the creepy fact that Grace likes to be bitten by Jaxson. Um… like seriously.

And then the ending was confusing. It’s mentioned Grace is a gargoyle… maybe… and she’s somehow transformed but they don’t say what that transformation is. Also how is she even a gargoyle if her dad was a warlock?

I will be giving this series one more book.

It was ok but felt very Twilight-coded, until the last 15% which felt completely out of nowhere!! Like seriously, what the hell even happened there. It was going to be probably 3 or 4 stars before then, but oh my god what even was that ending?!? Overall, it was still entertaining, but yeah the ending really ruined it for me

I would probably not call this a "good" book, but it definitely has given me some serious entertainment & a lot to think about, including:
  1. This author's fixation with being over-the-top tongue-in-cheek about the genre in which she is writing. I have over a dozen quotes noted down where she has the MC mention this is "just like a romance novel" or "just like a horror movie". The worst offender is when the vampire love interest LITERALLY gives the MC a copy of Twilight. I will say, it is funny but perhaps not in the way the author intended.
  2. Dialogue is poorly-written, this is sometimes also very funny in an unintentional way.
  3. There is no rhyme or reason to lore, Twilight lore is more internally consistent than this.
  4. Going off of point #3, the outright fact that vampires are mammals in this universe and that born-vampires exist, but they cannot drink milk. Curious as to what baby vampires subsist on and how they get the mammal classification if their mothers don't feed them with milk.
  5. I don't want to spoil it but the Plot Twist Reveal about the MC made me cry I laughed so hard. I would call it brave, groundbreaking even, but my friend told me not to.
I am compelled by "bad" art that is supremely interesting and I am having a lot of fun liveblogging this series to my friends, so I will be reading the rest of them... but I don't want to recommend them unless that's the kind of thing you're into.
