This was fucking weird 😂 I really adore Brown Girl In the Ring and while this wasn't as good, it was very readable and exciting. Good characters too!
There are some controversial scenes in this book surrounding incest. I understand personally where the author is coming from, I'm not offended or unduly put off by its inclusion (they are gods and incest is a big part of myths), but I also understand why others are icked by it or can't get past it in the narrative.
The book's first half, I was holding on to the breakneck pacing set by the author. After that point, I sort of slipped off the ride and lost the plot. I really love the imagination and ambition in Nalo Hopkinson's two books I've read but this one was less accessible for me though its language and pacing were still very readable. If you like weird, strange, fun, fast, complex fantasy books with lots of plot and action, this might be perfect for you!
