I loved the backstory of both characters and how they intertwined.
The most astonishing part for me is how Sophie describes emotions, feelings, sensations(touch, taste, etc.)
This less spicy than the first one.

This book was overwhelming for someone as sensible as me.
In a good way.
The plot is as expected (no surprise there) but I donā€™t think that was the real purpose of the end of the story.
It was an intense journey.

I need to give this the same disclaimer as I did the first one - this book was not written for me. Iā€™m not the target audience, I read the first one without preparation and finished it because I was curious. I ended up enjoying this one more than the first (probably because the start of book 1 made me so unbelievably uncomfortable). The relationship between Cole and Mara is undeniably fascinating in its codependency and brutality. The plot was quite good too. It is a very twisted boom with heaps of trigger warnings but it is well written and in this case the acts of violence that are described in detail are kind of less awful because while reading the book, Cole manages to also manipulate the reader to some extent believe the acts are justified (even though they are obviously not). The book does a very good job at manipulating the reader even though you know you are being manipulated. You have to like this kind of stuff but if you do, itā€™s definitely worth the read and the second book is in my opinion less horrifying to read (specifically as a woman who really does not enjoy reading about any kind of violence by men against women).

I liked this book more than the first one, however I still donā€™t think this duet is worth all the hype it gets. Like, sure, the mmc is extremely morally gray and quite literally kills someone for the fmc. But it still doesnā€™t hit like Haunting Adeline does. Thereā€™s some aspects that remind me of it, like Mara tuning into Coleā€™s ā€œdark sideā€, but other than that thereā€™s not much else. I do like their scenes, and seeing the relationship and character development from book one to book two was nice because it was very clear with the developments. Cole started feeling someĀ strongerĀ emotions towards Mara, whether that be because he had an obsession with her or because he genuinely felt that way with her we donā€™t know, but I still like how it was pretty clearly stated. Maraā€™s growth was VERY clear, as she was less timid and scared by things and started to take on the more morally gray concept as well.Ā

I did like this one better than the first. I liked learning the backstory for the characters, but I feel like it was also very dragged out and that wasnā€™t necessary.Ā

Very enjoyable, almost seems like both books couldā€™ve been one with each being a different part. Finished both in one sitting each
