Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder follows Pippa, a student eager to uncover the mystery of missing school girl Andie Bell, who disappeared five years ago. She’s convinced that the person painted as Andie’s killer, Sal Singh, is innocent. She reopens the case and discovers things about her town and peers that she never would have expected. My favourite character was Ravi, and my least favourite character was Max. I recommend this book because I think it being written from the perspective of a teenage girl adds something to the murder mystery trope that other mystery novels can’t as easily convey. Holly Jackson also does a great job of portraying the struggles of both women and people of colour. ‘The people you love weren’t algebra: to be calculated, subtracted, or held at arm’s length across a decimal point.’

Very Serial podcast-esque investigating a high school murder and a, potentially wrongfully accused, murderer. A who-done-it, with many people looking like they could be the murderer, multiple secrets revealed and unexpected twists.

It was great as an audiobook; I loved Pip as our narrator and investigator. I didn’t realize it was a series, I just put a hold on the next book.

A fun and engaging YA mystery with similar vibes to the Truly Devious series. I liked the friendships and the central mystery was engrossing with enough hints to keep me invested but not so much that the reveals felt obvious. Will more than likely continue with the series!

I would have loved this as a high schooler, but it still works as a quick read now.

Unlike most murder mysteries, this novel lays out all the evidence in a detailed easy to follow way. You’ll probably be able to piece together & create theories long before the MC does.
