The first half of the book leaves the reader thinking they are reading a story of nostalgia. The second half runs in an entirely different direction and the book becomes a story of survival and resilience. The plot is bizarre and incredible. Some moments are clearly intended to be funny, but they deal with such serious subject matter that the humor falls flat. The nuts-and-bolts writing is pretty good.

Trigger warnings: dysfunctional families, child abuse, sexual abuse, pedophilia, spiritual/religious abuse, homophobia, drug use, alcoholism, depression, snuff porn, suicide. Many of these topics are referred to, not explicitly described, but if you are sensitive to any if them, you might want to skip this book.
