Beautiful characters in a sadly realistic environment. Toni Morrison’s best.

The prose in this book is beautiful and describes even the most mundane experiences in a way that shows how multi-layered they are. I love Toni Morrison's use of metaphors as they were all so visual and so poetic. I like how this book shows human flaws and human behaviors and how one person's behavior can be affected by, but can  also affect an entire community.

Despite Sula's betrayal, I really liked how Sula decided to break out of the box. How she saw what the other women were raised to ignore, to consider normal. That she knew how miserable they ended up and what a cruel fate that was. And years later, Nel knew that what Sula had said was true. It was interesting, as well, to see the magical element surrounding Sula's existence.
The last scene, at the cemetery, was the perfect ending to this book and I don't think I could ever forget it.
