Ohhhhhhhhh disappointing. For one thing, I have no vested emotional attachment to Malina. Her character dug herself a hole soooo deep from book one that she’s not climbing back out anytime soon. You could also say this is her book. Not a fan.

If anyone remembers the suspense of book 4, it ended with a set of events that were obviously destined to happen. The sad thing is, they didn’t coalesce until the last 15% of this book. Book 5 is essentially a lot of filler.

There’s also some really cheap suspense made for the sake of suspense when it comes to Rissa.

Just overall, after improving steadily for 4 books, this book is a big step in the wrong direction. Several moments where I couldn’t help thinking, “You keep using that word. I don’t think you know what it means.” Poor plot, ridiculous murder rampages, cheap suspense, and lots of disappointment.

Gold takes place after the conflux. After Auren has gone through the rip. After Slade has found out that Drollard village is gone along with his original rip and everyone who lives there including his mother.

Auren blissfully falls to annwyn. When she arrives, her ribbons have regrown, she feels at home, and her gold is back. Fae have seen her return and compare her to Saira Turley, another Orean who fell through a rip.

Slade is on his way to 3rd kingdom. He has tried to reopen the rip in Drollard but can’t. He has his power back but now enough raw power to open a rip.

Malina has willingly used her blood to reopen the bridge of lemuria. Which is now a route for some very angry fae to rejoin Orea and take it over. Marina is being held captive with only the shadow assassin visiting her.

Saira Turley also fell through the sky into the exact same field. She united Orea and Annwyn and created the bridge to Lemuria. Auren is the last Turley heir.

The problem is Annwyn is no longer a Turley kingdom. It has been taken over by the Carricks. They carricks have banished or killed all the Turley loyalists. Wick is in charge of the loyalists that will
Stand with Auren.

Meanwhile, the carricks have crossed lemuria and are killing all oreans on their way to 6th kingdom.

Malina somehow develops a conscience and is no longer as selfish as she was. Working with the Shadow assassin, she is traveling to 6th to right her wrongs and warn her people.

Slade is unable to find Auren so instead is going on a revenge tirade to anyone who wrong Auren in any way. Including Red raids, 2nd kingdom, 3rd kingdom, her masters from the brothel, any sex traders. He also kidnapped Kailas brother manu for Osrick to torture to help him get through Rissabeing in deaths door.

At this point, Slade and Auren aren’t together. So no smut. So author is supplementing with Rissa/Osrick and Dommick/Malina. Don’t love that.

Sixth kingdom does not welcome Malina. Everyone ignores her warnings about the fae coming. She is kicked out of the castle. She goes into the town and tries to fortify around the town to at least save her people. She is able to build ice blocks to fortify the town, but they still don’t believe her. Queen Kaila comes and ends up, tearing down the walls right when the Fae crest the mountain. She flees before the fae start their attack.

On a mission with the Valumin, Auren finds herself on a fact finding mission at Lord Culls manor in Annwyn. She discovers that the oreans she is looking for are actually the missing ones from Drollard. Including Slades mother. And Lord Cull is Slades father.

Auren and Lord Cull fight. He is confused why Auren has rot in her. Her is holding Elore (Slades mom) captive. Aurens beast awakens and she uses the gold and rot together.

Cull knows that the combo of auras and magic means Auren and Slade are a bonded pair. Päyur.

Wick also appears to have Turley heritage as he bleeds gold and uses gold dust.

The book ends with it being revealed to Auren that the fae have marched on Orea. The bridge to Lemuria has been rebuilt. She has a way to get to Slade. Until some fae used their magic to make her forget.

This book was WAY too long. The last 15% was brilliant but everything else seemed extraneous. Like it was filler so the author could get to 6 books. This is one of my favorite series but I was pretty disappointed in this one. I am hoping the finale is able to save it.

Auren is stuck in Anwynn fighting desperately to get back to Slade, but there’s no way back to Orea. Malina was a fool and made a deal with fae to gain magic…only the bridge of Lemuria was unbroken and the fae march upon Orea to kill. Auren meets Lord Cull, Slade’s father. Slade can feel Auren, but will he get to her in time?

A gracious 4 only because I love Auren and Slade.

I absolutely adore this series, but I honestly struggled a bit with this book. I found it super slow up until the last 10%, and then it was full on action - good cliffhanger ending (and very sad too!) so I'll definitely read the final book, I just felt it was too drawn out at the start!
