4.5 stars. This is not a perfect novel, but I really enjoyed it. I’ve read two novels by Godden so far and her portrayal of the British in India reminds me very much of [b:A Passage to India|45195|A Passage to India|E.M. Forster|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1421883612l/45195._SY75_.jpg|4574850], this one more so than [b:The River|3798|The River|Rumer Godden|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1356450945l/3798._SY75_.jpg|2015310]. Her prose is not quite as elegant as Forster’s, but there is a rawness of feeling and emotion that feels very genuine. Godden writes tragedy without sentimentality, which I really appreciate.
