It got a bit tedious towards the middle but was actually quite a good book. Oh and the audiobook had the added bonus of sounding like Shrek!

Having read my first ever MacBride last year, I was keen to enjoy another one.

This is another pacy, well constructed read, but was a bit too graphic in parts for me. I always get squeamish when children are the victims of mysteries, and tend to think it's a cheap way to shock.

When I saw the book cover I was intrigued, the blurb on the back of the book had me suckered.

The first page were the reader is introduced to the killer and first victim had me hooked.

Than we meet our protagonist and I instantly hated this book.

I don't care about Ash's bad dealings, I don't care for his money habits, I don't care for his anger issues, I don't care for his issues with his ex-wife's love life. That ruined the story.

Ash is an arrogant a-hole of a man that doesn't like his own story. It's almost like his in another world.

Both his daughters go missing, yet majority of the storyline he only cares about one.

This story feels like it refuses to acknowledge the criminal dubbed as "Birthday Boy" and instead focuses on the bad cop Ash is. When it's revealed who the "birthday boy" is, it's a choas of mess that feels like a let down.

I ended up skimming through majority of this story due to its over descriptiveness of every little near useless detail. Like I don't need a step by step of what the characters are doing.

This is a major DNF book and I'm NEVER reading a Stuart Mc Bride book ever again. This so bad!

I wanted to like this. I wanted to love it... it was too chaotic and messy. It’s such a shame I was so looking forward to it. I found myself hurriedly trying to finish to get to a ‘better’ bit.

Don’t get me wrong there were some really good bits but not enough to save it for me.

Unfortunately i DNF-ed this one at 55%, which is a shame as i really enjoyed the 3rd book in the series - clearly his writing has improved. I could've smacked Ash over the head a number of times, but I decided to just put it down and maybe pick up book 4 instead.

Birthdays For The Dead…. This book was so brutal! There were parts of this where I physically went
