Ruthi Knight's debut novel Knotted Roots was a perfect summer read! If you are someone looking for a good quick YA contemporary novel with nice characters and a cute romance, then you seriously need to pick this up!

Knotted Roots is a story about a city girl Roxie who is forced to spend her summer out on her grandma's farm. Her life is perfect back home, she is popular, goes to all the best parties, and has her best friend Amber. Spending her summer on a farm away from her perfect life is the last thing she wants to do. But while at this farm she may come to realize that her life back home is far from perfect, and maybe the farm life is just want she needs...and wants.

This was a solid debut! I think Ruthi has released an excellent first novel and I believe her books are only going to get better! This book follows a storyline that alot of contemporary books do, spoiled city girl forced to spend time out in the wild or farm, meets a country boy that changes everything. While Knotted Roots does follow this storyline, the author made it all her own. This novel didn't completely revolve around the romance, yes the romance was a really big chunk of the story, but I felt the stories main focus was on Roxie and her developing and growing as a character.

Seeing Roxie develop and change so much as a character was probably my favorite part while reading Knotted Roots. When I first meet Roxie it was hard to connect with her as a character, she is spoiled, and not all that friendly. It took me quite sometime to warm up to Roxie, and I think that is why I had to bump my rating to a 3.5 instead of a solid 4. Although at the end I did really love her as a character, I still wish I would have been able to connect with her as a character earlier on in the story, but instead found myself detached and not caring so much what she was going through. Even with that being said watching her change was my favorite part of Knotted Roots, to see how much she grew from the beginning of the story, to the end was amazing.

Moving on from Roxie I think anyone that has read Knotted Roots can agree with me that Grandma Betty, Chase, and Katy were awesome characters. Grandma Betty was probably my favorite out of everyone in Knotted Roots, she is so insanely caring to everyone around her, no matter if you are blood or not, and she is also a bad ass. I loved when she would tease Roxie or put her in her place. Grandma Betty was a very admirable character. Chase is Roxie's love interest, and I have to say the author made a perfect match with Chase and Roxie. Chase is exactly what Roxie needs, he is caring, forgiving, and patient. I found myself rooting for him right from the start, I believe anyone that loves a cute sweet country man is going to love him! Then last, but not least there was Katy, who I adored, we don't get as much of Katy as I would like in Knotted Roots, but thankfully I just found out that Katy gets her own novella called 'Hidden Falls' (which I am so buying and reading soon!) Katy was such a good friend to Roxie, even if Roxie didn't act very appreciative of it, Katy was still quick to forgive her and let the past be the past and move on. She was just the super sweet girl next door and I just totally loved her, and found myself wishing she was my friend!

Overall I just really enjoyed Knotted Roots and look forward to Ruthi Knight's upcoming novels (such as her upcoming New Adult contemporary novel Burn Out which comes out August 10th!). I believe fans of Sarah Dessen may enjoy Ruthi Knight's Knotted Roots. (:

What an awesome read!!! I was hearing such great things about this book, so I definitely had to pick it up. I'm so glad that I did!! I absolutely loved the storyline. Character interactions were excellent and the real life situations that they dealt with hit close to home. I really liked the grandmother. She was real rough around the edges but she was struggling daily. I really liked her strong personality.

Overall, this story progression was great and I really liked the way everything played out. Great job Ruthi!! You are very talented and I can't wait to see what you have coming up next!! :)

I've heard about this book for awhile now. I kept seeing the excerpts for it all over the place and was thinking I gotta check this book out. Now months later I finally sit down to read it and my first thought is damn what took me so long.

Roxie is sent to spend the Summer before her senior year in some podunk town in South Carolina with her Grandma Betty. Roxie who comes off throughout the beginning as a spoiled rich kids thinks this is some sort of punishment. She doesn't even know this lady and as far as Roxie is concerned Grandma Betty abandoned them a long time ago. I feel sorry for Roxie because I know how angry she is with her parents over this but at the same time I also feel sorry for Betty cause Roxie doesn't really give her a chance in the beginning. She's a brat!!!

Chase (swoon worthy) and his brother Brian are "honorary" members of Grandma Betty's family. Due to something that happened in their past she is very protective of them. This causes problems for her relationship with Roxie at times who feels that her Grandmother is choosing Chase over her. Chase is attracted to Roxie from the beginning but she doesn't make it easy.

I laughed, cried, cheered, and yelled while reading this book. At times Roxie made me so frustrated I just wanted to shake her and tell her it's time to grow up and put your big girl panties on already!!!! What's life without a few chances and that's something that Roxie needs to learn. Will she learn to take those chances with Grandma Betty, Chase, Brian, and her neighbor Katy?

I originally received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. After reading it though and experiencing so much emotion and passion for the characters and their stories I had to go out and purchase it. This a must read for all book lovers out there. Thank you Ruthi Knight for such a refreshing and wonderful read. Congrats to you on writing one of the best debut YA novels I've read in a long time. I look forward to reading more from you.
