Witty, humourous and thoughtful. All vibes only. You’ll go through daily journal entries of a secondhand bookshop owner’s day-to-day life. Caught myself smiling at times.

📚 ADORE 📚

Friends, if you put this one next to The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin, it would constitute my dream book pairing and I would simply sit and stare at them and re-read them and sigh and fall in love all over again. THAT is how happy this book makes me. I read a library copy but now owning my own for my forever shelf has become a priority! If I can’t get to Scotland to visit this book shop someday I shall be deeply disappointed.

The title of this book is 100% accurate. It is the diary of a bookseller. In Scotland. It’s transactional and cantankerous and absolutely hilarious. It’s concise and provides virtually zero drama or flair. It’s AMAZING and has definitely made me rethink my relationship with Amazon ~ I have now vowed to only order anything from A If I can’t easily order it from somewhere else. Even Target is better!

This book also seriously enlightened me on the topic of the world of used bookselling in the time of Amazon.

After reading Jen Campbell's book 'Weird things customers say in book shops' I was keen to read more accounts of booksellers and this seemed the perfect read! I really enjoyed it and I think it has changed the way I shop in second hand book shops eg take time to look at the different genres and any weird and wonderful finds! It also made me more sympathetic towards booksellers and gain an appreciation of what they have to deal with in a daily basis! I enjoyed the characters particularly eccentric Nicky! I also appreciate references to similar books, a couple of which I have already added to my to read list. The only things stopping this from being a 5 star read for me is it got quite repetitive at parts, and could have done with cutting out the days where nothing really happened and focusing on days that did! Also I lost track of who was who as there a lot of staff members, customer's and friends names mentioned and I couldn't remember who was who! Overall I really enjoyed this and can't wait to read more similar books!

This book won’t appeal to everyone, but as someone who dreams of opening a bookstore and living in Scotland it was fantastic for me. Loved his humor and the day to day ridiculousness of life as a used bookseller.

A bit monotonous at times, but you can't get distracted or you'll miss the unexpected puns. The narrator is very good and I've enjoyed it. However, now I feel guilty because I borrowed it from the library. On audio version. The author would not be pleased, ha!
