Denise Mina's books are a such a treat. A wonderfully convoluted story with the usual cast of engaging characters, though less focus on DI Marrow's life than in previous books in the series.

As always, masterful and tightly plotted. So good and so grim. Perhaps not my best choice for a jolly holiday read, but so good. I love Alex Morrow like a real person.

Looking at the list of books in this series I hope that the author hasn't moved on from Alex Morrow as this has been a series that has kept me gripped over the years. certainly Denise Mina creates great women characters as she has done in the Garnethill trilogy and the Paddy Meehan books.
In this the 5th Alex Morrow she is drawn into the investigation of a missing woman who it is suspected has fingers in criminal money laundering as a big multi force investigation is underway.
The main plot centres on a small seaside town where villains and innocents get drawn into a web of deceit and criminality. Alex as ever is juggling her role as tough detective in a mans world with her home life as mother of twins and estranged half sister of a notorious Galsgow villain currently holed up in a local prison.
great storytelling and hopefully Alex will be back soon.

Detective Alex Morrow investigates the disappearance of a wealthy Spanish woman who the London and Glasgow have been investigating for fraud. At the same time a woman's body appears in a loch in Helensburgh, a wealthy enclave. Alex discovers the two incidents are related and is relentless in trying to solve both.
I think this is a book that I think would have been better if I'd read rather than listened as I didn't always keep track of all the ins and outs.

VERY Scottish... all the characters are average, typical, flawed people in a small town.

If Mina is writing it, I’m reading it!

As far as mysteries go, a Denise Mina book is almost always five stars. I love the intricacies of the plot, but what is most compelling is the empathy Mina has for many of the "bad guys." I have only read the Alex Morrow books, but I need to go back and read her other series.
