“For the valour of the Edain the Elves shall ever remember as the ages lengthen, marvelling that they gave life so freely of which on earth they had so little.”

Gondolin is now Gon(e)dolin.

I love this more detailed version of The Fall of Gondolin. Although I think it gets a little boring when the same story is repeated but with little changes. This book was more alike Beren and Luthien with different versions of the same story. I liked The Children of Húrin more. But I’ll still give this book five stars since The Fall of Gondolin is simply epic.

Tolkien'in özellikle birçok ismi değiştirdiğini görmek mümkün.

Summary:  The main narrative of The Fall of Gondolin follows Tuor, a man who finds the hidden Elvish city of Gondolin and there makes a place for himself. Whilst in Gondolin, he falls in love with the king’s daughter, Idril, much to the annoyance of Idril’s relative, Meglin, who had asked to marry her several times. Meglin decides to take his revenge on Tuor and Idril by revealing the location of Gondolin to their enemy. In this book, Christopher Tolkien also includes helpful excerpts from outside this main narrative, including a section on what happened to those who were able to survive the attack.

Overall Thoughts: I really enjoyed the versions of The Children of Húrin and Beren and Lúthien which Christopher Tolkien released and, despite the main narrative not appealing to me as much as those first two narratives, I still enjoyed this look into the creation of The Fall of Gondolin narrative. As with Beren and Lúthien, The Fall of Gondolin provides a fascinating insight into the creative process of J.R.R. Tolkien. The insight these books give into J.R.R. Tolkien’s creative process and the number of versions all of these stories went through without ever being fully finished is fascinating and Christopher Tolkien does a good job bringing his father’s developing ideas about the world of Middle Earth to life.

I had hoped that the various writings on the fall of Gondolin had been stitched together into a more or less readable narrative. They were not. This made it very difficult to get through and spoiled the magic of what should have been a very exciting story.

One of the better Tolkien stories that precede Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. I say this because even though I did love The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and all the others, they are sometimes very difficult to read. They are told from third person POV and often contain many pages of lineages and foundings of cities etc. The Fall of Gondolin is different and although it is written in third-person, it still holds the essence of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings that is so well-loved. Battles of epic proposions and adventure are what can be found in this tale - balrogs, dragons, elves, and men. I do wish this was written more like Lord of the Rings in a novel format because I love the story - but this will do for now.

I would love to see this turn into a movie or TV series if they could try to not mess it up too terribly. I should add that it may be difficult to read if you had not read the other tales of Tolkien, as many characters in this book are mentioned in other novels and make for an easier read.
