Yay for a fun new series by an author that I actually know! I met Rae in a training a couple months ago. And I’m hooked. I only wish there was audio versions of them.

The book is free for a reason!

I had some issues with this book. The mystery in it was interesting enough to keep me reading, and there were plenty of red herrings and the clues came together nicely (I figured out who the killer was about halfway through the book, but since this is the first in the series I let that go), but the main thing that will most likely keep me from reading the future books is the way the main character thought of herself- and her love interest. What a joke this guy is, and he treats her like crap- casting aside her opinions as useful for one thing- and treats her like she's lucky that she has his interest! Tired of seeing crap like this in modern books.

Fun book

This was a Kindle free book and I was expecting a light weight cozy. I ended up enjoying g it very much. My only complaint is that the protagonist is such a wuss and just keeps knocking herself and refusing to stand up to other people’s demands. It became annoying.

I got this free on my Kindle. Not a bad mystery, just average.

This is a very light mystery, very low-stakes; the story itself seems to have no impact on the story world, which is a little odd. Other reviewers complain about the main character being weak-willed and the male characters too domineering, which I didn't notice at the time (not being personally sensitive to such portrayals), but I can see in retrospect. I actually found that aspect a welcome change from the usual Mary Sue-ish author insertions in these types of books.

Lucy Mathews is a very flawed protagonist. She not only can’t say no to anyone but she is really hard on herself and the people she surrounds herself with do not help her one bit. I am hoping she gets stronger as the series continues especially if she is going to be hunting down killers. As a side note, she adds milk to her soda, yuck!! It must be on Montana thing. I know the author lives in Wisconsin and having lived here my whole life I know it is not a Wisconsin thing.

My favorite character without a doubt was Lucy’s malamute, Kiska. He was there for Lucy throughout all the drama she found herself in the the middle of. He happy woo, woo, woo sounded just my own canine companions.

The mystery itself was very good with plenty of suspects. It could have been a little tighter but it suffers the first book in a series syndrome. The author has a lot of work in the first book. They not only have to have a mystery for the reader to follow but they also have to introduce the setting and all the characters. This author is trying to do this in about 100 less pages than a typical cozy mystery as well. I feel we get a good grasp on Helena, Montana and the basics of the characters were introduced. I am hoping in Cut Loose, book two in the series, we have characters that continue to evolve and a mystery that is a bit deeper. Davies has laid the groundwork, now she has to follow-up and build on what she has created. Lucy needs to stand up for herself and get some decent men in her life.

I really liked the plot, but the main character bothered me. I have no idea how her business (or she herself) could survive if she constantly caved in to everything and anything other people asked of her. I kept on wishing she would go home to mommy and daddy so they could run her life while more mature characters could take over the story.

A cute, fun mystery that was light and fun to read. Well written, decent plot, and characters with a humorous bent (although I wouldn't call it hilarious, it was amusing at times). Some interesting romantic tension and there's a hint that the main character will be getting some backbone. All in all, I enjoyed the book very much and will be looking for the next one.
