This is just enjoyable. The main three characters are very fun. Kest might be my favorite character in anything; he’s just really funny for my sense of humor.

Falcio’s past is alternately really upsetting and darkly funny. The truth of the king’s death killed me.

The sword fighting is handled really well. All the action is good, and I think the politics pretty much hangs together.

The plot itself does hinge almost entirely on coincidences, which is basically fine since I just assumed that was how the magic system worked.

Unfortunately, this is also a book where a big part of a main character’s motivation is the sexual assault and murder of his wife. There’s also a scene where a woman has sex with him while he’s tied up, sobbing, and saying no. And this is treated as if it healed him from his trauma. Gross.
