an excellent blend of urban fiction and urban fantasy. minion is heavy with dialogue, but l.a. banks' worldbuilding was so complex and fascinating that i didn't mind. the time spent talking also makes damali's strong relationship with the warriors of light crew extremely believable. as a reader, i wasn't told, i was shown the strength of their bonds.

i can tell that l.a. banks had a wonderful time writing carlos. he is the perfect balance of sensitive and power hungry. there is so much yearning going on between him and damali - i love it!

can't wait to dive into book 2!

I was really happy to find this book because I've been looking everywhere for a paranormal romance with a Black main character and this is it! I liked this book enough but I didn't love it, it really wasn't a romance to be honest. I really like the book from the beginning to the middle, that was really exciting and engaging, the stuff that came after is what I'm not really a fan of.

Everyone keeps complaining about the "hip hop" dialogue and I'm not understanding if they're irritated that the characters were speaking AAVE (African American Vernacular English) or if they're bothered because some of the dialogue is a little clunky.

I wish there were more than two actions scenes in this book, the action scenes are really where this author shines.

Overall, this book could have been better but it was okay.
I'm giving it 3 out of 5 stars.
