Bookish People by Susan Coll
⭐️💫⭐️ (2.5/5)
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
About 315 pages
Sophie has owned her DC bookstore for many years. While it used to bring her loads of joy, recently, she feels a bit burnt out, driving her desire to spend her days hiding in a secret nook at the back of the bookstore. One of her employees, Clemi, is also in a state of chaos. She recently acquired a pet tortoise, her roommate is in the midst of a breakdown, and she suspects a controversial poet, Raymond, who they’ve invited to speak at the bookstore, might be her father. Raymond recently released a new collection, but his press tour is being destroyed by rumors that he is to blame for his wife’s suicide. This leads him to a spiral of his own… Bookish People is a comedy surrounding the chaotic lives of a handful of book lovers and how they all intertwine.
The cover of this book drew me to it! I mean, how cute is it? I ironically bought this book about a DC bookstore while visiting a DC bookstore 😂 While I loved the cover of this book, I, unfortunately, didn’t love the book…. There wasn’t anything I explicitly disliked, but I overall just felt indifferent to this book. It felt like we were watching a sitcom about a bookstore, so there wasn’t really a strong plot, and Coll’s writing felt a bit all over the place.
Favorite Quote: “She sometimes thinks the world divides into two types of people, those who think books are for reading when there’s nothing else to do, and those who avoid other things to do in order to read books— and, unsurprisingly, she’s in the latter camp, but really, is that so awful?”
