A very easy read. There is never really any tension but the characters keep me interested. Devoured this in half a day and I'll probably read the rest.

Really good introduction to the series. I'm looking forward to reading more.

I just couldn't get into it. Read all of Pierce's tortall books as a child and just reread them so I thought I'd give the ones I never read a whirl.

Sick and rereading childhood favorites for fun. I’d probably count the whole series as one book.

Clearly remember these being some of my favorite books. Would definitely recommend to kids.

The platonic ideal of a children’s book. No transphobia, minor orientalism, what could be better?

This was a cute read, with a well developed world, four strong characters, and a story that built slowly until the end. I had some trouble keeping the characters apart at first, and I never completely understood the magic.
Young readers who enjoy slow paced adventures with magic, strong female characters, a supportive mentor, and great friendships, will enjoy this read.

Content:
Violence: near death and scary experiences, including a plague that kills all their families, a lone survivor form a shipwreck who is shunned from her community because of bad luck, and being locked inside a cell and forgotten about.
Religion: the gods are mentioned throughout the book. They pray to them, worship them in temples, and draw the gods-circle on their chests.
Romance: we hear that there are places where both genders bathe together.
Other: characters can use magic, though this is done with the gods’ power. They manipulate forces in nature, and scry the future.
