Did you ever finish a book and realize you were somehow holding your breath through the whole ending?? The Dark Corners of the Night was that kind of experience.

This is the third book in the Unsub series and while it could be read alone, I highly recommend reading all 3 - they build on each other and you will fly through them and want the next immediately.

The series follows Caitlin - a law enforcement officer as she is involved with a different case in each book but also with a storyline that carries through them all. In this book, Caitlin is working for the FBI on a serial killer case in LA - the killer targets families, killing the parents and leaving scary messages with the kids.

This is definitely a book to read in the daylight hours. I highly recommend the whole series if you are a fan of Criminal Minds or similar shows. I can’t wait for the 4th book!!

Thank you very much to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance reading copy.

I liked the plot and how it was about the BAU team. I thought it dragged on a while in the middle. I liked Hannah a lot.

The Dark Corners of The Night is the third book in author Meg Gardiner’s Unsub series. One of the best series that I have read in the past decade. Caitlyn Hendrix is a truly great protagonist with an awesome taste in music and boots. (I wish that the author would compile a list of songs on either Spotify or Apple Music because the choice of songs in this novel are awesome). This time Caitlyn and her team must race against time to find out who is this Unsub known as The Midnight Man and capture him. The problem is that the guy is always a step ahead of them. He’s smart enough to remove the bullets from his victims bodies. The only witnesses are frightened children. Like most killers he becomes a little too sure of himself and begins to make mistakes. The worst being underestimating a new mother with a pump shot gun. Though she does not survive the ordeal, she certainly leaves a mark.

I rated this book five stars out of five. The writings fast paced and intriguing. All the characters are relatable even down to the children. This particular Unsub is the scariest in my opinion because of how he manages to evade the police with ease. The fact that at one point not even the FBI can stop him. There’s one scene where he finds the perfect place to hide and somehow the police manage to check everywhere, but that one location. I will definitely recommend this novel to all my fellow bookworm especially those who like a good thriller. I am looking forward to book 4. It’s going to be so good. That’s all I will say.

Worth the wait!

I love this series -- the characters are really easy to connect with, and the crimes presented in each book are interesting! I will say this was my least favorite of the series so far, but it was good nonetheless.

Know that you will want to read the whole series, as every book ends on a cliff hanger. Worth it though! Highly recommend.

6.7/10 I really enjoy the UNSUB series by Meg Gardiner. This was a solid entry in the series. For some reason the UNSUB in this book didn’t seem as sinister as anticipated, but maybe it was just me. I do recommend this book!

I am traditionally not a huge mystery reader because I tend to guess plot points in advance and not feel engaged by the characters. Particularly with FBI BAU agent stories, I am extremely picky. I absolutely adore Meg Gardiner's Unsub series, though! The crimes are always extraordinarily creepy, the suspects even more so, and I see a lot of myself in Caitlin due to our familial backgrounds. The Dark Corners of the Night was the most shiver-inducing book of the lot because the crimes were home invasions. Any time you talk home invasion, the hairs on the back of my neck immediately go up and I start considering my own home's vulnerabilities and how to shore them up. Gardiner builds the suspense beautifully, drawing out the discovery of the Midnight Man, in addition to forcing us to realize just how human we all are and just how close our pasts really are. Along with my recommendation comes a huge trigger warning on self harm. As always, Sean Rawlins continues to be my forever MVP of what a man should be--seriously. I adore him.

Potential With Problems

For most of this book I thought it was going to be solid 4 stars, but man the finale here let me down. It tried so hard to have maximum tension and excitement it veered into the ridiculous. All the detective stuff before that was pretty good, but these books almost feel like Criminal Minds fan fic. If Gardiner would try to make these books feel a little more realistic it would go a long way. Not making dumb mistakes like having a character wield a shotgun, but then call it a .30-06 which is a rifle round could be avoided with a Google search. Also I couldn't understand why the main character was so shook by this particular case when a seasoned FBI agent would be used to greater depths of depravity on a regular basis.

That all makes it sound like I hated this book but I didn't. It was entertaining and a fast read. I'll read the next one because the Ghost storyline sounds interesting. Just up the realism and originality.

Update: As I've been thinking over some past books and reconsidering my reviews this is one of the books I rated too high. It's a fast read and parts were entertaining, but man this book and this whole series in particular has problems. There's a reason there were so many negatives in my original review and just lip service to positives. The negatives stick out like a sore thumb.
