Despite reading the content warnings and seeing "death of an animal" listed as the second highest graphic warning, I was extremely unprepared for how graphic and sad that part was. It is horrific and I don't think telling it in such detail added anything to the overall memoir.

I sometimes find memoirs overly self-indulgent, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I felt almost disappointed at the end as I wanted the journey to keep going! I found it a little difficult to get through the descriptions of Cheryl’s mother’s illness, but that was due to personal experience and not a reflection on the quality of the writing, which flowed well throughout the book and conjured some wonderful images of the PCT. While I like my sofa too much to do anything like Cheryl did, her story has reminded me that there is a big world out there waiting to be explored and that grief should not be a barrier to living life to the fullest.

Wow, this book. I honestly avoided it for a long time, because I knew the story would make me sad, but I was on a trip and it was one of the only things available. As someone who has always felt more connected in nature than anywhere else, following Cheryl on her journey as a woman hiking the trail was incredible. Her story is an inspiration to anyone struggling with grief or addiction, showing how you can overcome and persevere even when you feel you are at your lowest.
