3/10/21 2nd reading - It jumps from 4 stars to 5 stars. I nearly love this book more than the first one because of the romance.
I have changed my mind about where this should be read. Definitely do not read it until after book 2. It has a spoiler.

22/3/2019 1st reading - A short novella, but I really liked the romance between Elloren's parents. It explained the beginnings of the gardnerians and how war begets war. I think this prequel should be read second in the series.

Great prequel to get some more back story of characters in the series!

I tried this after finishing The Black Witch this past weekend. I raced through that 600+ page book yet felt this one really dragged. I just didn’t care about Tessla at all and found her super irritating. I was also sick to death of the repetitions about her and Vale’s affinities calling out to each other or whatever. We get it. They both have fire magic. No need to beat us over the head with that. I got 60% of the way through and decided I just didn’t wanna waste anymore time on this prequel. I’ll still give whatever’s after The Black Witch a try though and hope I go back to enjoying the story.

This was fun for a prequel! Nothing too new or spectacular but I did like it
