I had choosen this novel as my main read for a trip and it was, for the most part, the ideal vacation book. I liked the rythm and the characters. I had never read new romance before, and it was a pretty good introduction. However, the main character is absolutely annoying. It was okay at first but I wanted to rip my hair off when she blamed Elliot for his litteral r4p3 because she was jealous of his r4p1st. I was also very annoyed by the fact that no one in this goddamn book seems to acknowledge what happened to Elliot as r4p3. This part was very upsetting to read, unfortunately.

Finished this book in one sitting because I could not put it down.

Of all my reviews this one will be the most biased so please take this for a huge grain of salt. I do still believe that my his may actually do more than simply inform of this being an incredible read, because it is that with all of the following bias removed:

The way this book and Macy, our main character, frames and portrays grief, and by extension the fear of losing even just one more great love, is so viscerally, painfully, vulnerable in a way that will linger with me for a long time.

It didn’t and won’t change my life in major ways but it put to words what hyper specific, lonely and painful thoughts and experience with love & loss is for myself. In many ways that affirmed, validated and addressed such complicated feelings that those who know, will immediately recognize. And if you didn’t know, you will have understood the depths of it all.

Above all, this was a beautiful story of a love that survived above it all, even after a long time and great many painful experiences passed.

It gave me the courage to face my own grief in a way I wasn’t sure I was ready for, and gave me hope that living is always better than surviving. Love & other words does just that.

Tragic and beautiful and hopeful.

The pacing of this tale was perfect. Even with Elliott’s ability to say exactly how he feels at any moment (we can’t help but stan), there was no rush with this romance. Eleven years has passed, so what’s one more day? This tale felt realistic even in its tragedy and overwhelming coincidences.

I devoured Love & Other Words in five hours. Stunning.

The spicy scenes with them as teenagers was just a bit odd and felt uncomfortable, especially when Macy was 3/4 months away from turning 18. Like how hard would it be to just wait a little bit in the storyline? Ruined the book for me personally, also just not a fan of main characters being separated for a long time- especially 11 years :(

This book ripped my heart out, dipped it in acid, lit it on fire, and then sewed it back together. A goddamn rollercoaster. It’s the heaviest love story I’ve read. The love that Macy and Elliot shared with each other for years and years was so tender and pure that reading about it almost felt like intruding on something very private. My heart ached for Macy so badly. The torch Elliot had been holding for her all those years made me believe in young love. This book is so much more than a fluffy little romance. It changed my relationship with books. Nothing I read the rest of the year came close to what this made me feel.

I read Every Summer After before this and I will admit they are like reading the same book, but this one was much better. I didn't like the conflict in this but I especially didn't like how they glazed over it with more trauma.

Really enjoyed this though!
