I devoured this book in just over a day. Really enjoyed the philosophical elements and the glimpse into Neanderthal society. Some characterization elements were... questionable (was it **necessary** to introduce Mary with a graphic account of her rape, which is of service to the plot only because it shows how Different and Good Ponter is from cis male homo sapiens? ). Great read overall though; it's clear the author did a LOT of research and preparation, and it paid off handsomely in terms of rich worldbuilding. I'm not sure if I'll continue on in the series, but I certainly enjoyed this entry.

I found the characters flat and uninteresting. I also was pretty upset by the fact there’s no official content warning. It’s a pretty awful way to introduce a character.
I probably would have liked it if the whole story was about the Neanderthal timeline. I was most interested in exploring their lifestyles, technology, etc.
