This book has one of my favourite opening scenes EVER.

I loved Chemical Hearts and enjoyed Sutherland's second novel just as much. She deals with the topic of mental illness in such a nonjudgmental way. I loved being in this story for a time.

Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares is a young adult contemporary that explores the theme of facing your fears.

Although the characters are more relatable for a young adult crowd, I feel that the prose and the dialogue could be anybody's cup of tea and shouldn't necessarily be subjected to a limited young adult audience.

The extract of the book I read seemed to be an interesting compound of writing full of wacky superstition, witty dialogue and quirky characters. I already feel compelled to find out more about Esther as a character and her fictional world full of agoraphobia, nyctophobia, social anxiety, and all the teen angst that surrounds these complex subjects coupled with a young age.

I found all aspects of this book engaging and seriously cannot wait to read the entire book.

Thank you to Readers First who gave me a 'first look' of this novel.

I tried to come up with a good, clever, and maybe even entertaining review of this book, but I couldn't.

I really liked this book. I didn't know what to expect from this. I liked who ended up being the apprentice at the end.

Esther believes her family are cursed to live their greatest fears and, eventually, die from them. This comes from her grandfather telling tales of meeting (& avoiding) death as if death was a person. Esther has been tracking her worst nightmares waiting for her greatest fear to emerge. She faces the world dressed as characters whilst translating for her best friend who doesn't talk and watching out for her brother. Then she meets Jonah and, after an interesting first meeting, begins to face her fears.

This was a brilliant read where you are not sure if the tales are true or just imagined. Did her grandfather really meet death? Why has her father really shut himself away? And as for the end... well a brilliant twist and turn making me love this family even more.

Thanks to Hot Key books and Readers first who provided this book in exchange for an honest review.
