“Everyone we let into our lives has the power to hurt us. Sometimes they will and sometimes they won’t, but that’s not a reflection of us, or our strength. Loving someone who hurts you doesn’t make you weak.”

I picked up this book because I had read House of Hollow by the same author, and the cover and description spoke to me.
I was sucked in from the first page, finding Esther quirky and weird, with a very active imagination and Jonah adorable and loving.
Somewhere in the middle I strayed away; maybe because some of the topics hit a little close to home. I nearly didn’t pick the book back up but after a few weeks I was ready to finish it. And I’m so glad I did. The ending wrapped everything up really well, while still leaving parts open to your own interpretation.
While the character are mostly lighthearted and joke about their problems, this book explored a few different mental health issues in great detail, through the eyes of a girl with a very active imagination.
I definitely highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about different types of love and fear, and explore mental health issues in a really imaginative way.

I went into this book expecting something light. It's. Not. Light.
It is funny, especially in the beginning, but the subject matter couldn't get any heavier. Seriously, so many triggers here.
As far as the quality of the book, it's highly readable and I liked it.
The message is important. The "mythology" of the book started to fall apart toward the end and stop making sense, though.

This is a good book. There is truth in this book. Some characters frustrated me beyond belief but that helped drive the main conclusions home. It did get slightly unbelievable, but if you can maintain that careful dance between reality and fantasy (which I can, if I read a book in one sitting like this), it works.

I feel like everyone loved this book and it just wasn't really my thing. I feel like it fell into magical realism a bit (which is fine!) but it just wasn't my favourite.
