Three cheers for my 100th book this year (and hitting my reading goal)!!!
I listened to The Midnight Lie on audio and I found out it was a series about halfway through and I was disappointed. I always feel like I need to finish every series I start and I wasn’t loving this at first. In fact, the first 75% was rather boring.
But the last quarter of the book? Yeah, that redeemed it for me. It ends on a cliffhanger so be warned but the ending, especially the last chapter and epilogue made me eager to read the next in the series.
Love a good sapphic fantasy novel where there’s a romance but also a larger plot going on. Spicy scenes are fade to black which was fine for me but I know some don’t like that.
Overall, it was good! 4/5 stars.

A fine read but not very complex, quite predictable and repetitive. Didn't find any of the characters very likeable, and wasn't super invested. The blurb was very intriguing but I fear the book didn't live up to it, sorry!
Graphic: Emotional abuse and Blood
Moderate: Murder
Minor: Abandonment

I'm making up for lost time and reading books with characters I relate to. This book is beautifully written and although it tells a familiar story, it warms your heart in a special way. I highly recommend it!!

I AM OUTRAGED
jokes aside this would've been a beautiful 5 stars, gorgeous romance buildup between the rake and the servant girl, and i genuinely loved Nirrim's arc. The plot kinda flopped its way through most of the parts before ratcheting up towards the end and I did feel that the conclusion suffered a bit due to how much was devoted towards the romance. which also ended in a fucking tragedy. I feel that the plot was not handled properly, in this sense.
Nonetheless, Nirrim coming into her own was buoyed by how well she handled a couple of her toxic relationships with Aden and Raven. Sid's character felt a little underdeveloped
In short, despite being a fairly run-of-the-mill class-differential YA novel with delineated districts and all (Similar to Crier's war) and fairly shallow worldbuilding (the magic part and the twist were...fine, just a little underdeveloped) - the romance did buildup really well, was written super well. and saved this novel. Hence, I am mad as hell this ended the way it ended and I am outraged!!!
