There were a few points in this story where I was tempted to DNF this. I was really worried it'd end up in the "oh God I hated this main character so much" pile next to Jay's Gay Agenda. LUCKILY I Stuck through with this one, and I absolutely loved how the book ended.

So, Noah lies A LOT during this book. It was really frustrating, because there were a lot of points where saying the truth would have actually been a lot easier than the lies he comes up with. He's also being bullied at school, has no friends other than his sister who lives in another part of the country, and his parents fucking suck. His mother is selfish and self-centred, and his father is absent.

I found the bullying, loneliness and bad parenting that Noah deals with incredibly upsetting at times. It really made me feel frustrated and hopeless and I wanted to DNF it just because of that sometimes. I'm glad the author at least gave him his sister, who was really supportive and loving to him throughout the entire book.

By the end of the book, we find out more about why Noah decided to lie so much, and the resolutions to the other things I mentioned are really satisfying. I also enjoyed the realistic open ending to the romance aspect of this book.

Could I have one YA/NA romance book where I don’t want to strangle the lead to death for their cosmic stupidity, please? /lh

I WILL be honest. I picked this book up imagining it would be like Be More Chill (the musical adaptation, not the book). And it was not. I am stupid. But I’m glad my stupidity made me pick this book up, because I really do like it. For one thing, it’s a relief to read a book about 1. nerdy shit 2. MUSICAL nerdy shit, and 3. being a weird gay teenager, and for it to be clear the author actually knows a lot about all three of those things. I have read TOO many books with terrible fake video games and social media, and fortunately, this was NOT one of them!

I will say there was something missing from this book that would make it a 5/5. And no, it’s not Noah Mitchell’s brain cells. I expect romance protags to be kind of stupid at this point— lack of blood in the brain, and all. I don’t love this quite as much as the last gay romance I read, but I do LIKE it. I don’t always have to LOVE a book for it to be good and worth reading. And also, let’s admit it— I’m starting to be out of the demographic for this book. As much as I still enjoy reading YA, this book will probably mean more to a baby gay than it does to me. But not every book’s tailor made for me, you know? :)
