I can’t decide if I want to rate this 2.5 stars or 3. So we’ll go with the latter for now. I thought the dark academia and magic was a great idea especially the way they picked 6 of the most unique medillans However I didn’t like the writing much. Found myself lost and not even caring about the characters. A lot of over explanation of what the characters thought, felt, and surroundings.

I was really wanting to like this book I just don’t think this was for me.

so much potential, too many words, not enough action. just too much going on but nothing at the same time?

none of the characters are totally likeable and just when you get close, the POV changes and it all resets. Also, I couldn’t care less about Nico’s side adventures.

This is quite a big brain book in that it really leans into the academia side of dark academia & Instead of having to suspend my disbelief I had to suspend my stupidity as I came to accept that no, I don’t understand any of the explanations but simultaneously no, they are not integral to the storyline so it ultimately doesn’t really matter if you skip over them in wilful ignorance.

However, none of the characters are particularly likeable & not in a fun way which made it really hard to get invested in any of them - I got close a couple times but then the POV would shift & not circle back for another 7 chapters or so. At points it also kinda felt like 6 different books as the characters fit into wildly different genres, mainly Nico who was in some YA fantasy universe all on his own, poor thing.

Overall, I quite enjoyed the experience but have no compulsion to find out anything more about them in a sequel.
