I mean.... I was entertained.  It's not for me. Maybe check it out if you're looking for a *fast-paced* romance between big strong possessive dumb (alien) man and strong-willed feeble (human) girl.   I was actually into the world-building the very very few times the flora, fauna, or lore was described. That was a surprising plus.
I would have been a little bit more generous on the star rating if not for the violence in the first chapter.   It was a lazy and  borderline offensive way to raise the stakes in an otherwise unserious story.

Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon
1/5⭐

Wow.. My first one star review.

Was this good? No.
Did it make me uncomfortable? Yes.
Was it fun? Barely.

I wanted to DNF it in the first few chapters, but I don’t write reviews for the books I DNF so I powered through it. Just for you dear reader.

—

Let us begin with its strengths..

  • It is only 188 pages long.

Onward to the absolute shit..

  • The plot was trying its best to hang in there, but Swiss cheese can’t survive at such cold temperatures without shattering.

  • The fact that the survivor of a horrific and graphic sexual assault is found dead in the snow and it is frammed as a good outcome is wild to me. 🫨

  • The way this novel talks about fertility is triggering. Basically claiming that beyond their ability to procreate the women hold little use or value in this society. Or even to aliens at large since the ones on the ships at the beginning seemed to have the same plan for their cargo.

I spent the vast majority of this entire experience cringing. Who am I kidding I am still cringing..

I can see why someone out there may enjoy this. However, I now know that monster/alien breeding smut just isn’t for me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Genre: Science Fiction Romance

Trigger Warnings: Rape, Forced Aborition, Abduction, Infertility

I really enjoyed this book! It is a super easy entry into the PNR genre that is packed to the brim with heart, heat, and humor. Despite being only 180 pages long I didn't feel like anything was rushed or that the book was too short. I feel like a lot of the time when a book is that short a lot of things feel lacking, but that wasn't the case for IPB.
We follow Georgie, our FMC who has been quite literally abducted by little green aliens, put on a ship and hauled off into the cosmos. The opening scenes are admittedly a bit confusing and grim, but are a neccesary introduction to the struggle for survival that ensues.
All of that may or may not sound like your cup of tea, but when I tell you I was grinning down at my Kindle reading most of the interactions between Georgie and our main man* (Alien) Vektal-- I absolutely mean it.
Our MMC is quite literally *ribbed for her pleasure*. His singular goal in life after meeting Georgie is being the perfect partner, and watching him fawn over her as they both learn to understand each other was way cuter than I was expecting. To top it off, it is unironically funny.
It doesn't feel like a book that is meant to be taken "seriously" in the sense that you would want to go in with the mindset of "these are the circumstances, everything feels super heavy and doom and gloom". It points to the unfortunate situation the characters are in, and makes light of it, matching the energy of absurdity with a level of "when in rome" acceptance.
I enjoyed my break from reality, and give it a solid 4*.

Really exceeded my expectations. I borrowed it from the library out of curiosity and I thought it was going to be really bad / goofy / cringe-y.

There's an actual plot in addition to all the sex scenes and I thought it was really well written for this type of book. It was funny and felt grounded in the world building. The SciFi elements were well done. The tension and stakes were good as well. Also the audiobook acting was really good!

Fyi when I rate books I only take points away when something bothered me about the book/ I think it should've done something differently/ there was something about it I didn't enjoy. So in my opinion this is a 5/5 because I didn't have any notes for doing any of it differently and I enjoyed reading it.

Trigger warning
there's one short disturbing, rape scene at the beginning  rape  by "bad aliens" not the titular ice planet barbarians.

I knew I would love the pairing in this story, but I did not anticipate how much it would grip me! A perfect, comfy read to pass the time. The characters were easy to get along with, and fun to follow through their unexpected journey. The walking alien sex toy was surprisingly heartwarming, and I will certainly be returning to the series.
