I still can't believe the brillance of "Cathedral." Stunning, and my favorite Carver story.

Each story in this collection is a reminder of how relentlessly self-absorbed we humans usually are. I found it to be bleak and rather depressing.

High four stars. Really liked these stories, would like more time to sit with them, but the library calls. Variety, avoiding tropes, interesting characters, just enough scenery.

The best book of short stories I've read... only Sherman Alexie comes close (IMO).

Nothing much happens in a Carver short story. You have been warned. Brilliant, though.

A masterful storyteller of the overlooked side of our lives - the everyday.

Not what I'd typically read these days, but man. Carver can sure draw a character. Economical as hell, too.

Frustrating if you do not take the time to go back and understand the underlying meanings and nuances of Carver's simplistic masculine style. I, usually, prefer longer, more eloquent writing, however, especially for the desolate, lost characters of Carver's stories, this writing style portrays their lack of life in a way I came to appreciate.
