The characters are diverse in that there are LGBTQ+ characters. All characters feel very white, even though some of them may not be. This may just be an error in reading on my part or some sort of internalized stereotype however.
This book starts as possibly the slowest and most boring book of the trilogy. The first forty percent of the book contains a lot of set up and very little suspense. The characters also feel like they should all be in their late twenties, even though two of them are in their late teens. They don't feel old in the way most other traumatized characters do either. They seem mostly unphased by the events of the last two books other than when there is an active threat.
There are several potential antagonists being hinted at throughout the novel. This is often a very nice technique however I felt the technique was a bit fumbled upon the reveal.It winds up being none of them. It is two characters, one who shares a work place with one of our main characters and another character you lowkey forget exists until the reveal.
The world is also unrealistic in how it handles certain events Owen being revealed to be complicit in the actions of Jared in book 2. The whole town just seems to shrug and go 'huh. okay.' The town also seems fine with revealed accusations that Jake's legal father killed his biological father. There was also very unrealistic use of an ankle monitor. This is partially justified by the incompetence of the local police. You have only a few minutes before the ankle monitor alerts the police of any potential tampering. Jake would have been found before he even had a chance to be missing.
The ending is a happy one with promises at a good future for all of them. Well for everyone who survives. Hooray for therapy!

While this isn't my favorite book in the trilogy, I do like how it ended. I love that the Bayview crew gets a happy ending, while also growing and acknowledging what they've been through. The pacing was nice and I really enjoyed the story. It did get a little dull halfway through, but I think it picked up again after the final reveal in part 1. I loved the discussion about privilege and how it plays into the legal justice system. </Spoiler>

Great page-turner bringing back characters from the first 2 books and deftly weaving their stories together. Often, in a series, the story gets watered down as it continues, but the author has managed to create another unique extension of the original story, building on the lives of previous characters as well as introducing new ones. Great friendships, fun twists, and a fast pace added more perks to the story.

I was skeptical as to what could be left to tell for the Bayview four, but I actually liked this book better than the second book in the series! I liked how interconnected the plot felt to the first book, as if it was planned to occur in the first place. They brought back a lot of characters from the first book to tie everything together. I also liked how we got to know a lot more about characters that were introduced in the second book. I thought that the concept was really compelling and I was on the edge of my seat like I was for the first book. There were quite a few unexpected turns that kept me on my toes! Overall, I would recommend!!

sad to be leaving bayview for good. but i am so happy that everything ended up okay. it really was bittersweet. i love all the characters (except maybe phoebe, but i’m glad things worked out with her and knox, for his sake) i do feel that it also resolved very quickly. i wanted it to explain things in more detail towards the end- it didn’t feel rushed, but almost too simple, if that makes sense. other than that i really enjoyed it.

One of Us is Back is our last trip to Bayview, which for many readers felt like home. McManus allows us to reconnect with our favorite characters, whether that be investigating a suspicious house or having a barbecue in the Rojas backyard. This was an amazing ending to an amazing trilogy, and for fans of the series, I would definitely recommend picking reading.
That being said, the plot definitely takes a back burner on this one, so if you felt so-so about books one and two, maybe this on you should skip! No matter where you stand, McManus is a phenomenal mystery writer, and I cannot wait to see what’s next from her!
Seeing Bronwyn and Nate again bumped it up from 3 to 4 stars! I would love to see an extended epilogue of them, or even a novella!
That being said, the plot definitely takes a back burner on this one, so if you felt so-so about books one and two, maybe this on you should skip! No matter where you stand, McManus is a phenomenal mystery writer, and I cannot wait to see what’s next from her!

Finished this all in one sitting!! My favorite is still the second of the trilogy but I will gladly accept any excuse to read about these characters. I liked Addy’s character growth in this one a lot, and I appreciate that the author didn’t go for any gimmicky pointless breakups between the couples. I thought I figured out the whole plot twist, but it turned out I was only halfway right, which was a super fun surprise!! I wouldn’t mind another ten books just about Bronwyn and Nate but other than that I really loved the conclusion this gave to the trilogy. I thought it was especially clever how the plot ended up tying back to book 1 in such a cohesive way. It really added an extra layer to the original mystery that was so fun. Such a refreshing read to pull me out of my book slump!!
