A solid debut novel from an author who is a K-9 handler IRL. It felt a bit choppy and some of the events didn't make a lot of sense (like the Feds dropping Doug's murder investigation so quickly). Maya is an interesting FMC. She's dealing with PTSD by self-medicating with alcohol and I suspect we'll see more of this as the series continues. I do wish that her character had been a bit more fleshed out in this first book.
Also, I don't know if the author was bothered by the cover. It's actually a decent cover.... except that the FMC's coloring is incorrect and the pretty dog is a GSD rather than a malinois.

Audible suggested this book to me and I found it to be exciting, suspenseful and riveting. Loved the former military, K9 handler aspect and Forest Ranger thread for the female lead. Characters were well developed and the story was fantastic.
I enjoyed the narrator as well.
Content & Triggers: alcoholism, drugs, strong profane language. Death of a loved one. Murder.
