This was a really good book. It gives an amazing inside view of racism and inequality in the 1930s south. Even as an adult, it really affected me. However. The sentences and chapters are sooooo long. I was totally physically exhausted reading this book aloud. And I really wanted more closure at the end. Its ending seemed very abrupt.

Powerful novel of Jim Crow Mississippi through a child’s eyes. The Logan family is unforgettable and real (based on the authors own). Racial prejudice, discrimination and violence is a cancer eating at America, an evil that must be faced. Stories like this put a human face on the problems and move our hearts to work for change.

This book doesn't shy away from the horrifying realities of the Jim Crow south, and I can absolutely see why it was so important when it was written. That said, in the 40+ years since this book was published, many other books have come out aimed at kids and tackling this topic, and this book doesn't feel as unique in 2024 as I'm sure it did back in the 70s. Considering its history and context I do think this book is really impressive, even if it may not feel as powerful now.

A great read! The author doesn't shy away from presenting the harsh truths of life for the characters, and presents it in a way that is easy for children to understand. It isn't a fun book, but it's well-written, engaging and important.
