One incredible book. Emotional but not exaggerated; the scenes from residential schools are told in a captivating, horrifying and realistic way. The story is told in a traditional way (rather than chronological/colonial) and I loved the simplicity of that. While the characters were a little flat at times, I feel this reflects the bleakness of character that residential schools create to real survivors. The author writes with purpose, vivid emotion and with knowledge. It’s challenging to read but an important insight into the ongoing plight of residential school survivors and their kin, until the cycle is broken.

At times hard to read about the abuse, but overall an absolutely terrific book. It reminded me of There There by Tommy Orange. I love books in this format, with every chapter from a different person’s perspective, until all the narratives come together. Would recommend in a heartbeat.
