Incredibly lyrical...but not much of a plot to care about. Novellas can suck you in as much as a 400 page book when done well, but sadly, this wasn't it for me. I wanted my first read of spooky season to be a good ghost story, alas, I am disappointed.

Premise was off to a good start...but that's about it. No good plot twist, not enough tension and story building. Just a lot of angst and meh?

Underwhelming. Feels like it should have been shorter or much longer. Some good spooky moments though. Quick read.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Conceptually, this book is fantastic - the folklore is woven into the story so well, the atmosphere is well-crafted, and the ending is strong. Cassandra Khaw’s weird, elegiac prose is actually beautiful; her descriptions are so specific, but they feel very tonally at odds with the stakes of the story - lots of description at moments it’s not necessarily warranted. I feel like we were always kept at arms length from everyone except the narrator (which makes sense, all things considered, but it stripped us of chances to find connection).

This book is a great quick-and-dirty horror story - conceptually great, even if it left something to be desired in its execution.

This was a fun quick ride but by the end I disliked most of the characters!

Great premise that could have used a lot more polish

Nothing but blackened disappointment.

There are things to like about this book, but they are scant. Descriptive moments that you wish would linger, only to be usurped by poor dialogue and narrative exposition. It just doesn't feel like a complete or realised book. I didn't care about a single character or moment. It never allowed me to empathise. I wish it had.
