This book was just ok. I liked the death that happened but not much else. The relationships were confusing. I didn't understand the ghosts at all. It was also hard to envision because the setting was described so poorly I genuinely didn't know where in the house they were at times. The ritual didn't seem well thought out either. But the number one problem I have with this book is it wasn't scary. The characters barely reacted to the spirits making them not scary at all and almost forgotten. When the spirits are the main point of your book, you can't make your characters act like they aren't there.

The last 30 pages were interesting and unexpected. Everything else was convoluted and boring and hard to follow. Lots of words I had to look up, some Japanese and others just really obscure English words.

The audiobook narrator ( Suehyla El-Attar) did a phenomenal job with the dark subject matter. The story gets very dark so if anything in the content warnings is close to something that will upset you proceed with caution.

It’s hard to even review this book since it was so short and quick. A lot happened but it almost seemed like reading a book by skipping every few chapters. I wanted a lot more info and development but the overall story and premise was so interesting (which is why I wanted more!). This almost felt like a story out of “scary stories to read in the dark,” which, in my mind, is a great place for a horror book/story to try and land.
