I do not assign a rating to books I don’t finish, regardless of the reason.

I tried really hard but never felt anything for the main characters or their storylines. I worry about falling into a slump if I force myself to keep reading a book I have no interest in. The premise is interesting and might appeal more so to someone else who enjoys YA fantasy, but this book was not my cup of tea.

I first read Kelly Andrew's Your Blood, My Bones and absolutely loved it - it's a masterclass in how to perfectly craft a novel. I was curious, then, when I finished it, to read her debut.

"Brittle of bone and prone to catching cold, she'd cut her teeth on the edge of death well before she could read."

The Whispering Dark reads very much like a debut, but one written by a very capable author. It's a book that takes tropes from the horror genre and breathes a new and interesting life into them. It kept me on the edge of my seat because I was desperate to find out what the hell was going on. It was creepy and intense and addictive.

Sadly, it suffered greatly in the first of its three parts, both from an underdeveloped setting and magic system and from the rushed development of the relationship between the two leads. I honestly don't know how Lane had the patience to put up with Colton in the beginning; I wanted to smack him in the face. I enjoyed their dynamic once he decided to stop being an asshole to her, but there really wasn't any chemistry at all at first.

I also think it was an odd choice for Lane to not do any investigating of herself when all the weird stuff started happening. It felt like she was only part of the plot because her friends dragged her into it. I honestly liked Lane, and can understand that all she really wanted was to focus on her studies, but the girl had no agency whatsoever.

Anyway, this wasn't my favourite, but I'll probably read anything this author decides to publish. I'm in awe of her writing, and Your Blood, My Bones was truly an impressive book on all levels.

Honestly I enjoyed this a lot! I was liking at the beginning and then it began to take on more of a horror element that I wasn’t expecting! The motivation behind the main villain felt a little unrealistic to me (like I understood why he did what he did but to have that be the reason why anyone is even aware of this crazy world hopping magic is a little wild to me) but the couple was great and I liked their realtionship. The story reminded me a bit of Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series for reasons I can’t really explain??
