Very old school horror. Something Guillermo del Toro would direct. Or maybe he has. Some of these stories feel very familiar.

Ranked from best to worst, not order of appearance:

THE BEST:
1. Canon Alberic‘s Scrap-Book — 4
2. The Mezzotint — 4

THE GOOD:
3. Oh, Whistle, and I‘ll Come to You, My Lad — 3.5
4. Number 13 — 3 (high)

THE MEH:
5. The Ash-Tree — 3 (middle)
6. Count Magnus — 3 (middle)
7. Lost Hearts — 3 (low)
8. Treasure of Abbot Thomas — 3 (low)

None of these stories were bad and due to their length (or brevity, I should say) easy enough to finish quickly even if not as engaging as some of the better ones. They all had their creepy moments but ultimately fell flat, all for different reasons.

Overall, it’s a 3.5 from me.

The version that I listened to had two volumes:

VOLUME 1
Canon Alberic's Scrap-Book
Lost Hearts
The Mezzotint
The Ash Tree
Number 13
Count Magnus
Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You My Lad
The Treasure of Abbot Thomas

VOLUME 2
A School Story
The Rose Garden
The Tractate Middoth
Casting the Runes
The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral
Martin's Close
Mr Humphreys and His Inheritance

Most of these stories were really tame. In the first volume, "Whistle and I'll Come to You" and "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas" both had a nice chilling moment near the end. Two of the better stories though were in the second volume. I liked both "The Tractate Middoth" and "Casting the Runes". The author also has a special fondness for old libraries, of which I heartily approve.
