I appreciated this book more for what it meant, than what it actually consisted of. I did definitely enjoy the three novels, but I enjoyed them more knowing that they caused such scandal when they were released. God forbid a woman be discontent once she’s married!
All in all, wholly recommend. A healthy dose of Irish feminism☘️

At this time last year I was writing a 40 page paper on autofiction, using this text as a primary source. These novels allowed me to explore the boundaries of self-awareness in literature, the malleability of memory, and the performance of femininity in 1930's Ireland.
But don't read this trilogy because I recommended it; read it because today (April 29th, 2013) The New York Times recognized [a:Edna O'Brien|7184|Edna O'Brien|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1262820726p2/7184.jpg]'s memoir among its Books of the Times.

Pretty depressing, as is most Irish lit, but a quick and easy read.

Summer 16. This book reminds me a lot of the Neapolitan novels. The reviews and the controversy over these books really peaked my interest however it was a hard read and in the end I just wanted to finish it. These women’s lives were so filled with tragedy and abuse. Baba was completely unlikable. I kept rooting for Kate but it was one horrible thing after another.
