Yup. Just as I predicted, this one turned out to be my favourite of the series (so far). I do like some books more than others, but this one was the best one. Oh, Gideon...…. what a man. And Scarlet was an excellent heroine – both really well written and the story was awesome… had depth and unforeseen developments that were actually resolved by the end (something I just looooove).

Since Gideon is possessed by the demon of Lies, he cannot speak the truth and everything he says is the opposite of what he means. I have to admit that in the beginning, I was totally annoyed by the ‘Gideon talk’ but I got used to it and really made me focus on the story because I had to actually think about what he was saying. In the middle of a steamy moment, hearing the person say “Gods, you are so ugly and weak” and immediately knowing he means the opposite, takes some getting used to. I wasn’t sure how well this book would be written since that would present quite the challenge for the writer – I really admire Gena for how well she pulled it off. It rocked!!

There are only a couple of minor things that seemed out of character and somehow didn’t flow, but they would both be spoilers and I aim to keep my reviews spoiler free!
Overall, loved this one and putting it on the ‘re-read list’!!!!!!!!!

Like many others, I wasn't sure how I'd like this book. I loved Gideon's POV in previous books, but I wasn't sure how a whole book of Gideon-speak would go for me. Thankfully, it was done really well, and even though I had to re-read in some places a couple of times in order to make sure I translated correctly, it wasn't annoying and I got pretty used to it after awhile. Oh and did I mention Gideon is fabulously sexy. Mmm...

Anyways, in this LOTU installment, we start off right about where the last book left off. Scarlet is a prisoner in the Lord's dungeon and she's told Gideon that they are married. He doesn't remember her or recall ever marrying her so she's a big mystery to him. What's even stranger though is that he does remember glimpses of her face and they both have the same tattoo -- "To Part Is To Die". Gideon is determined to get answers from Scarlet so he breaks her out and takes her somewhere else where they can be alone and he can get some answers. In the meantime Aeron is determined to traverse to hell in order to rescue Legion.

So I really liked both Gideon and Scarlet. I thought that this story was probably one of the more heartbreaking of the books so far. Although I really hardly ever cry during books (very few and far between), I did find myself on the verge of tears a few times during this book. Don't get me wrong though, it wasn't all sad. Gideon and Scarlet are very much cute together and they are very teasing with each other, which was fun. They also had a lot of hot and steamy moments which were muy wonderful.

The one thing I have to say I didn't like about this book was that it seemed like the side stories almost become too much. I would just be getting into the moment Gideon and Scarlet were in and then be sucked into Amun or Strider, or someone else's POV. While I do like this and I think it builds the characters and the next story very nicely, I thought this story did it too much. The side stories seemed to take away from Gideon and Scarlet's story and that was disappointing.

On a side note, I LOVE that we get another Immortals After Dark moment with the YouTube video and Carrow. Awesome. I am also finding myself strangely intrigued by characters I didn't like before. I'm curious about what's going on with Galen and the glimpse into his weaknesses we get and also what's going to happen between him and Legion. I am also kind of starting to...maybe...like Cronus. I'm still leery of him and don't know his ultimate motives, but for some reason I'm softening to him.

Overall, loved this book. I couldn't put it down and I'm seriously excited for the next book. Although, reading the description that Amun will end up with Haidee instead of Strider is surprising and a bit disappointing. With the moments her and Strider had in this one, it almost seemed like it was setting up for their book, not Amun's. But oh well. Most of all though, I really loved Gideon in this book. He's so sweet and caring and I'm loving his tattoos and piercings. He's awesome. On to the next one!

Favorite Moment...
"Got hot sauce for this disgusting snack?" he asked Cronus as he reached into the bowl for another helping.
"No." The king shuddered. "Why would you want hot sauce? Who puts hot sauce on popcorn?"

Gideon really is a blessedly funny, cute and well... eatable!!

In the latest instalment of the LOTU we had Gideon and Scarlett getting together with more information thrown into the pot from Strider and Amun as characters.

A lot of the other characters only got small mentions in this story and were much more cameo roles. Which was a good thing, as sometimes there are too many characters to keep up with.

We had been introduced to Scarlett in the previous book A Darkest Passion where Scarlett had told Gideon that she was his wife. BUT his demon lies could not tell him if she was telling the truth, or if she lied.

This book gripped you by the (insert what ever most appeals to you personally) and took you along with the ride. It certainly wasn't an awwww cute kinda book. It hard blood violence, misbehaving families along with vengeance and of course our main love story.

So we know from previous novels that Gideon cannot tell a truth without out feeling serious pain from his demon lies. We also find out how bloody funny he is too and how loyal he is to those he loves.

Scarlett is a goddess who has been shunned from her family almost from the time of her birth. Rhea has not been the best mother, Cronus as her step-father hates her and her aunt sides with her mother. Scarlett had a crush on Gideon from the beginning when she was growing up in captivity as a life-long prisoner.

Through this novel we find out the true falsities and truths that have been woven into Scarlets life and how Gideon helps her with the process. We also see Aeron, William and Amun travel through Hell to find and bring back Legion.

Another gripping book, that twists and turns the whole way through.

Another really strong instalment to the LotU series.

I have been really impressed with the last couple books of this series. They have become a lot less predictable with a lot more twists and turns involved, and this one was no exception.

Just when you thought you knew what was what and how it was all going to play out- Wrong! It really took me by surprise quite a few times. I also like the fact that, as we get more comfortable with the world Showalter has built, and have just about memorized each Lord and his accompanying demon, it's nice now to go and "visit" with some them and see how their story lines are progressing. A couple in particular I can't wait to get to are Paris and Torin. I know Paris is getting a book but I'm not sure about Torin. I just can't see how he can possibly get a HEA with his demon, but I'm sure Showalter will pull something fab out of the bag for us.

I'm also intrigued by the little cameo appearances from some of my favourite ladies from the Immortals after Dark series by Kresley Cole. Torin seems to appreciate them too! It would absolutely be beyond cool if Cole and Showalter collaborated for a love match between two of their characters. I would be all over that!

Anyway, back to this one. I was really looking forward to Gideon's story. Well, I was kind of equal parts looking forward to it and equal parts dreading it. The fact that he has to speak in opposites, or "Gideon-speak", is as amusing as it is infuriating and I don't envy Showalter the headache she no doubt had whilst writing his dialogue scenes! It did make me chuckle occasionally, though, and I did fall quite hard for Gideon in this book.

Scarlet, his love interest, was very likeable too. And the way their story slowly unfolded with surprise after surprise, was great fun to read. The love scenes were smoking hot as usual, and it was just a great example of Paranormal Romance.

Looking forward to the next one, The Darkest Secret, which is Amun's story, up next!

4 Stars! ★★★★

We continue the story of the Lords of the Underworld with Gideon's story. He is the keeper of the demon Lies. He speaks in lies all day long because if he speaks the truth his blood turns to acid and his bones begin to liquefy and he eventually passes out from the pain.

I like Gena Showalter and her writing style... I really do. HOWEVER, I feel like she lost some steam on this one after a great "The Darkest Passion". It was slow most of the time, jumped from Gideon and Scarlet to Amun and Strider at all the wrong times. OH and I was SUPER ANNOYED by Scarlet. I have never been irritated by any of the featured heroines in the book but Scarlet took that award. Her back and forth, her wanting to leave after Gideon begged her to stay even after admitting that is what she wanted to hear and still leaving... just frustrating and emotionally draining especially because it lasted so long and kept on as a recurring theme UNTIL THE END. I liked Gideon enough but I did think his point of realization of the love he felt for Scarlet was rushed.

The theme of this entire book was LIES. I got that real quick and to get to the truth and the end of the book was a bit tiring. Parts of the book just didn't come together as cohesively as it could have. It was so choppy and so heavily coated by lies that by the end of the book I wasn't sure any truths were told in full to wrap up Gideon and Scarlet's story. This at least is something the other books had.

I really hope Amun and Strider's stories are better. I am leery about them seeing as how by the end of this book Strider is feeling something for Haidee who is supposed to be Amun's love interest in the next book and Strider is supposed to hook up with Kaia who Amun was interested in but had his reservations because she slept with another Lord, Paris. TOTAL WEIRDNESS!

The first half I found very slow and boring to get through, but I liked the second half more. It was really irritating though to have most lies translated. It's really not hard to work out the opposite of a simple sentence yourself!
