A phenomenal look at what exactly caste is. Any yt person interested in anti-racism work should read this. It’s heavy and hard to read, but in all the ways it should be when reading about the oppression of billions. Don’t expect to feel good about yourself- expect to learn.

Wilkerson's strength is in narrative, in drawing you in to the real, personal examples she chooses to illustrate her points.
I was a little disappointed that the book didn't go into depth on the research it summarizes and alludes to, but it's not an academic work, it's aimed at the general public, and at conveying clearly and viscerally the ways caste operates in our society to the uninitiated, and it does that very well, if it does at time feel like treading well-trod ground to those of us who have read extensively on the subject.

This book is a definite 5 star because it has changed my life - my view, my ideas, my core. Isabel has the gift of telling her story and the stories of so many others. I loved the way it was broken down into sections and ideas. This is a book that everyone should read for enlightenment. But I'd suggest reading it slowly as it is a lot to take in.

Elegant prose as I have come to expect from Wilkerson. Really fascinating and insightful exploration of the parallels between how Americans treat blacks and nazis/Jews and the Indian caste system.
