This is one of those books that makes you question why does the world have to be so rough on the least deserving. While the story didn't make me cry like others, it did make me sad. I just didn't personally identify with any of the characters fully. Bits and pieces of them, I was able to. To be honest the biggest turn off for me was all the scripture talk. Its not a personal liking in everyday life, so reading about it made me uncomfortable. I don't knock the book for it though.
The synopsis gave too much away since it was easy to know one of the characters was going to die, not so much who. It still took away from my reading experience.

The Serpent King is enchanting and haunting in all the right ways. The language is beautifully written and the characters are vivid and eerily real. Even though this story is about three teenagers from the rural south, I do relate to their stories regardless of sharing little to no identity markers with them. I think the author does a brilliant job at making you feel these characters no matter what your background might be. I have a pure love relationship with both Lydia and Travis, and more of a love-hate relationship with Dill. Nonetheless, each character will garner some sort of emotional response from you and they will push you to think.

This novel covers so many topics including abuse, poverty, bullying, mental health, religious extremism, and pedophilia. Reading about these topics is hard and uncomfortable, but so necessary. The only reason I am not giving this title the full five stars is because I feel like some issues fell into the background and weren't necessarily fully developed. However, I am in awe of the conversations this book has started. I will definitely be reading it again!
