Investigating the Milky Way and Other Galaxies with Velma by Ailynn Collins

I received this book from Netgalley/publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I was instantly pulled towards this one when I saw it on Netgalley. Scooby Doo? Velma? Galaxies? YES! But I am a bit disappointed.

I just had expected a bit more given that it was the Scooby Gang. I think Fred got one appearance, Daphne also one, Shaggy/Scooby several. The images of Velma were just the same x set. I just had expected a bit more playfulness, a bit more animated/interactive. Puzzles. Jokes. Comics. More a Scooby-feel. There is so much that you could have done. Now it very much felt like someone wrote a space book, decided it was a bit bland, and added some popular characters.

But I did like the information we got about space. I did like that it was written in a way that is accessible for even younger kids, and that is worth an applause, as sometimes even those books go a bit too deep in things. But this was actually fun and we learn about galaxies, the milky way, planets, about black holes, about photographs from space, and several other things. I also did like the photographs on every page.

If you are looking for a fun book about space, I would say yes, this is your book. If you come here because you are a Scooby fan along with a space fan.. I am not sure. It just feels as I said and that is a shame.

It’s amazing to me that Scooby-Doo is still going strong after so many years. And I still love the gang. Especially Velma.

“Investigating the Milky Way and Other Galaxies with Velma” by Ailynn Collins (pub date 01 Aug 2023) is part of a series of astronomy books for children from Capstone Press. Velma is our guide as we explore the fascinating subject of galaxies! It is a still a mysterious area of science so the Scooby-Doo connection is perfect.

This book for young readers covers galaxies, dark matter and energy (spooky!) and many other things in the universe. I was especially delighted to read about the women who have pioneered research in this area! You know a book is good when you find yourself going down the rabbit hole (or should I say "black hole” mwa ha ha) after reading it. There are some big words to learn but not too many and I think any child (and many adults) would enjoy this informative and fun book! Just wish there were even more gorgeous photos.

My child is all grown up so I probably would have missed this book if not for NetGalley and Capstone Press. Thanks to them both!

This was a very well done. It talks about galaxies and mentions many things that I had never read before in a book of this level. The Scooby Doo portions of it aren’t the best but it is a draw to get the kids to pick up the book. And in this case, it works very well. Overall, this was a fantastic read with interesting information and the kids are sure to laugh and want to read the rest of the series.

SCOOBY DOO.

I've only recently gotten more into Children's books and was pleasantly surprised.

I learned more about basic astrology than in my astrology class in college.

I'm a huge fan of Scooby Doo and loved all the interactions between the gang. The way the book was broken up, between pictures and learning was done very well.

Perfect for fans of Scooby Doo and any kids interested in Astrology.

Thank you to NetGalley and Capstone Press for an e-Arc.

If your kids like Scooby Doo and are interested in space, this is a great jumping off point for learning! It’s full of information and even includes references and websites for more learning opportunities! We get a few conversations with the Scooby gang but mostly it’s Velma telling us about space. It’s cute and informative and the information is recently updated which is extra exciting!
