So well written. The narrative style is so different and I really liked it. this book is so sad and heavy yet, keeps you hopeful. It was really jarring sometimes how Nao would talk about really heavy/disturbing things in such a light manner. As if it's normal to her, but that just made me feel more for her. The dream element was really interesting and a little unexpected, but I didn't really mind it. Honestly, having some parts of it not be very realistic made things slightly less sad. Really liked this overall. It's heavy, sad, and uncomfortable at times, but reminds us that's what life is sometimes and there's still hope for things to turn out ok.

incredibly intelligent writing. this book is  in conversation with proust’s à la recherche du temps perdu, and tackles inter-generational feelings, the crashing of the past with the present cross-continentaly, time and memory. very layered, gripping and the narration controls your sense of time and space. absolutely stunning.

Not giving it a full 5 'cause I wanted to know more about Jiko. I think this has become one of my favorite books and I never say this.

I love this book SO MUCH. You get a lifetime experience out of a mildly thick piece of paper it's incredible. I will keep thinking about this book until I forget who I am and it will always be a fond memory.

This one was certainly a ride.  Picked this one up on a whim at a small local bookstore and it was a great find.  The idea of connecting with someone through an old lost diary is really interesting and the way it was pulled off here was great. Nao felt like a real person and I felt like I was reading her real diaries

Overall I would recommend this to anyone willing to do a thorough search of the content warnings because it is a heavier read with a lot of depressing moments

Good characters, good writing, fun "quantum" magical realism. Rated lower because it isn't really my personal taste and
the cat gets badly hurt

This book touched on basically every topic I'm interested in, I feel like it was made for me. Quantum physics, Japanese language, Buddhist philosophy, Zen practices, time. I felt like every other page contained a quote that I wanted to store in my brain forever, I loved it. One of my favourite books so far. Some quite graphic descriptions of Nao's bullying, but I guess it pulls you into the harsh reality that she had to face.
