I can earnestly say that The Importance of Being Earnest has now become one of my favorite plays. Oscar Wilde's wit and theatrical genius shines in this hilarious play which also pokes fun at Victorian manners and morals. I can't even count how many times I laughed out loud! I especially loved the way the theme of duplicity was used constantly throughout the play and the clever witty lines all throughout.
I would really recommend everyone read this and watch an online or real-life version of the play since it is truly spectacular! This was the very first work I've read by Oscar Wilde and it certainly did not disappoint in the least!

Since this has been reviewed, critiqued, studied and held aloft upon some mighty pedestal under a golden beam of light by so many, I shall keep my contribution brief.
Oscar Wilde has created a comical farce - a series of lies and exaggerations made by characters Jack and Algernon, coupled with the far-fetched coincidences occurring along the way provides a method in which Wilde can mock the assumed mannerisms of the society at the time.
I found myself laughing at the situations - Jack and Algernon arguing over muffins. I feel that, even though this was meant as nothing more than a satirical piece, written as though it were simple "playground" mockery, the ridiculousness of the situations presented got in the way of my enjoyment of the play.
I have given the play 4 stars as I enjoyed the jokes and sly quips, but found the plot too farcical to enjoy.
